Den met Kay, the woman who would go on to become his wife and the mother of his two children, while he was working at Turnbulls. His colleague Tom was going out with a girl called Sandra and set him up on a blind date with Sandra’s sister, Kay. It was love at first sight for Den and he and Tom began making the trip by train to Bere Alston to see Kay and Sandra as often as they could. Den and Kay tied the knot in Bere Alston in February 1965 and spent their honeymoon in Torquay. Two years after their wedding, the couple celebrated the birth of their first child, Katherine. A second daughter, Andrea, completed the family with her arrival in 1970.
